The Exchange: IoD Emerging Leaders x GACO

Understanding compliance risk is fundamental to effective directorship.

The IoD Emerging Leaders supports the development of experienced managers, senior leaders, associate directors and newly appointed directors. This event is an opportunity to understand the compliance-related obligations and responsibilities directors face.

Committee members from the Guernsey Association of Compliance Officers (GACO) will explore the evolving landscape of compliance and risk through the lens of those leading critical functions across financial services.

This event is designed for experienced managers, senior leaders, associate directors, and directors seeking to strengthen their understanding of compliance.

This event will offer practical insights into how compliance teams operate, engage with regulators, and influence strategic decision-making in complex environments.

The panel discussion will highlight current challenges and future trends in regulatory transformation, governance, and risk management, including how firms respond to regulatory scrutiny and prepare for operational change. Attendees will hear first-hand accounts of working in compliance, from managing cross-functional teams to leading industry engagement.

Panellists

Richard Field
Chair, GACO | Partner, Appleby

Richard is Chair of the Guernsey Association of Compliance Officers (GACO) and a Partner in Appleby’s Dispute Resolution team. He is both a Guernsey Advocate and a Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales, specialising in corporate, trust and commercial litigation and regulatory matters, with a particular focus on data protection, AML, compliance, technology, and eGaming.

He has acted for a wide range of local and international institutions on complex cross-border disputes involving funds, banking, investment relationships and trusts, including leading cases under the “consent regime” and matters relating to proceeds of crime and sanctions. Richard has also played a prominent role in trust and estates litigation, including appearing in landmark Guernsey cases.

Recognised as a leading adviser on data protection and cyber risk, Richard has been at the forefront of advising on Guernsey’s Data Protection regime and GDPR. He served on the States of Guernsey’s GDPR Industry Working Party, is a member of the Islands’ Data Governance Forum, and is a qualified GDPR Practitioner. He regularly advises insurers and clients on cyber incidents and breach response.

Richard also advises on a range of technology-related matters, including digital identity, cryptocurrency, digital wallets and e-CDD projects. He was ranked as the only Guernsey Band 1 Notable Practitioner in Chambers Global Fintech 2024, with clients praising his expertise, experience and practical approach.

Naomi Leach
Associate Director, Teneo

Naomi advises organisations across the Channel Islands on business-critical transformation, regulatory change and remediation. With over a decade of experience in financial services, she has led multidisciplinary teams through complex advisory projects and served on regulator-appointed engagements. Naomi is a committee member of the Guernsey Association of Compliance Officers (GACO) and is actively involved in supporting the development of future compliance and advisory talent within the Channel Islands financial services community.

Danielle Harrison
Head of Compliance and MLRO, Suntera Guernsey

Danielle has over 25 years' experience in the local finance industry and leads the compliance function across Suntera’s fiduciary, corporate and fund service lines. A Fellow of the International Compliance Association, she holds advanced qualifications in financial crime compliance and governance. Danielle works closely with the Guernsey Financial Services Commission (GFSC) and the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) and is an active member of the GACO committee.
