‘Guernsey’s Superpower’ and Social Capital - Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez Shares Government Priorities at IoD Breakfast

‘Guernsey’s Superpower’ and Social Capital - Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez Shares Government Priorities at IoD Breakfast

The Institute of Directors (IoD) Guernsey Branch welcomed Chief Minister Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez to discuss the States’ priorities for the island at its latest breakfast event, sponsored by Skipton International.

Acknowledging recent challenges within the States and the G8’s call to improve collaboration amongst Deputies and Committees, Deputy de Sausmarez reiterated the importance of good governance, transparency, and public confidence in Guernsey’s institutions.

The presentation covered a range of strategic priorities for the term ahead, including fiscal balance, growth and productivity, social cohesion and inclusion, and housing.

‘Fiscal balance is right at the top. That is obviously a pressing issue and one that we need to tackle with great seriousness and careful attention,’ she said.

‘A big part of the problem of where previous P&R committees have fallen down is that, irrespective of the merits of the proposed package, they really didn’t manage to take the community with them.’

The Chief Minister explained that a ‘twin-track’ approach is being taken to tax reform, continuing preparations for the approved GST+ package while also exploring credible alternatives with external tax and policy experts.

‘There are no foregone conclusions, but the electorate made it clear they want this re-examined.’

Deputy de Sausmarez also stressed the need to involve businesses directly in shaping practical solutions, with connectivity, workforce participation, and economic enablement being highlighted as key levers.

‘We want to enable the economy to thrive so that we can support a high quality of life for everyone. It has to be a two-way dialogue, it’s not just about government telling you what we’re doing, it’s about listening too.’

Noting the contribution of the business community, she said: 'You’re on the front line more than we are in your respective sectors, and we need that insight.’

In the Q&A session, attendees raised questions on innovation, access to affordable childcare, care for the elderly, economic strategy, regulation, housing finance, and social inequality.

Deputy de Sausmarez responded candidly, noting Guernsey's historic ability to reinvent itself: ‘We’ve always found ways to succeed by being nimble and well-connected. But we need to design that future together.

‘Connection is our superpower. Guernsey is a small, well-connected island, and that’s an advantage. We want real dialogue, not just box-ticking consultation.’

Glen Tonks, Chair of IoD Guernsey, said:

‘It was a pleasure to welcome Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez to speak at our sold-out IoD Guernsey breakfast event. Her transparency marked a refreshing and energising start to what is a critical political term for Guernsey.

‘The IoD has been clear about the importance of restoring confidence, building trust, and ensuring the business community has a meaningful seat at the table, and Deputy de Sausmarez’s remarks reflected a shared commitment to those principles.’
